Hot Springs, Cowboy Boots & a Montana Weekend

Montana weekends spent in a slow manner is the crown jewel after a busy work week.

No rushing. No overthinking. Just cool mountain air, a hot spring waiting somewhere down the road, and a day that doesn’t need much of a plan.

This weekends agenda: soak, wander, and dance under the Montana sky.

The day begins with a swimsuit, an oversized sweat shirt, worn-in denim and a pair of cowboy boots tossed in the overnight bag.

Slipping into the hot water gives me permission to slow down.

I am usually carrying more than I realize when I arrive. Too many thoughts, a long list of things to do, the constant noise of everyday life. Then I step into the water, settle in, and slowly let it all go.

The mountains seem to encourage it.

Surrounded by southwest Montana’s wide-open landscape, I find myself noticing small things again. Clouds moving over the peaks. The sound of wind through the trees. The changing light on the hills.

I don’t need entertainment.

I don’t need to be productive.

I just need to sit there and be in the moment.

After a long soak in mineral-rich water, everything feels more balanced.

Then it’s time to get ready for the evening!

The outfit doesn’t need to be complicated. Faded denim. A simple tank. A leather belt. A good pair of boots. A flannel shirt and an extra layer for when the temperature drops after sunset.

Montana style is less about looking perfectly put together and more about looking like you spent the day outside. (Which you do or did)

By late afternoon, the boots are on, the hair has dried in the sunshine, and the road leads toward live music.

There’s something especially Montana about an outdoor country concert — music drifting across a field, mountains in the distance, string lights coming on as the sun goes down, and everyone eventually finding their way toward the dance floor. Montana’s summer music scene blends country, folk, and the outdoors in a way that feels exciting and low pressure.

The next morning brings more soaking, relaxing, then wandering and wade fishing on the Yellowstone River.

And maybe that’s the real luxury of a Montana weekend.

Not having every minute planned.

A hot spring for self healing.

A drive with the windows down.

Good boots.

Cold evening air.

Live music.

And nowhere you need to be except exactly where you are.
